Scammed!

I’m a little bit embarrassed to talk about this being that I am a geek and very security oriented. But I feel it’s important for all of you to hear. I recently had my eBay profile hijacked. Here is my experience:

  1. I logged into my Bank of America account to lookup a past check I had written. Here’s what I found.
  2. BoA Screenshot
  3. The first thing I did was call Bank of America to report a fraudulent charge. While I was on hold with them I called Amy to make sure she didn’t purchase anything from eBay recently.
  4. After 10min on hold with BoA I eventually get no real person so I hung-up.
  5. I went to researched on eBay what could have happened, and found my account had been locked.
  6. I called BoA back and finally got the appropriate person (after 3 transfers) and she assured me that they can reimburse the account once the transaction is out of Pending state. Great…the waiting game.
  7. BoA agreed to give me a new debit card just in case. 5-6 business days…great more waiting.
  8. I finally got semi-logged into eBay to find this:
  9. Ebay Screenshot
  10. Apparently someone was listing items under my account.
  11. I emailed eBay (because they don’t have any other way to get ahold of them). The say they will get in touch with me withing 24-48 hours. Perfect.
  12. The email arrives 5 mins later. Things are looking up. The email directs me to a “Live chat” session with an eBay associate.
  13. After several identity checks she is able to unlock my account and credit the account. Well that’s good.
  14. So now we’re playing the waiting game. It’s strange how the bank is so quick to withdrawal money but putting money back in, is a longer process.

Here is my advice to you all. Be sure you are signing into the site you want. Look for the little “Lock”‘ symbol in the lower right of your browser. Also make sure the address starts with https. I normally do this, but sometimes I get in a hurry and don’t pay attention. I think what happened is I signed into a phishing site. From there the thief listed items under my name in hopes to make me pay for listing items. From there he would have whoever bought his crap wire the money via Wester Union.

Another recommendation for you all is to keep tabs on your financially important accounts. Also make your passwords really hard. For instance my highly critical passwords look something like “2wRdd,Bn’RTDQuD<1)=h”. I know its extreme…it’s also safe. Take advantage of all the great password managers out there too.

Oh, in-case you wanted to see the crap that apparently I was selling, here it is:

That’s right, their pants that say Juicy on the butt. Come on you think they could think of something better to try and sell than juicy-butt pants.

I guess I understand the purpose behind this

From http://lovegodsway.org/GayBands

One of the most dangerous ways homosexuality invades family life is through popular music. Parents should keep careful watch over their children’s listening habits, especially in this Internet Age of MP3 piracy.

I think I understand the point behind this but, I’m not sure “labeling” the band gay is the appropriate term. Although I do think its kind of funny that Elton John is on the list twice.

That’s what I’m talking’bout!
